The Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, has announced the death of its Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Chudi Akaenyi, who died on Monday, October 19, 2026, after a very brief illness.
Akaenyi, who was 77 years old, was until his death residing at Christ the King Parish, Adazi Nnukwu, where he served as a priest of the diocese.
His death was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Diocese through its Diocesan Chancellor and Secretary, Very Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi.
The Diocese, while announcing his passing, expressed gratitude to God for what it described as a fulfilled priestly ministry, while also expressing faith in the resurrection of the dead.
According to the announcement, the late priest was born on January 8, 1949, and ordained into the Catholic priesthood on June 30, 1979, marking more than four decades of service in the church.
The Diocese extended its condolences to his family, parishioners and all those mourning his death, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
It added that arrangements for his funeral would be announced in due course.
