The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has intensified enforcement operations against illegal structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels within the Awka Capital Territory, as part of efforts to tackle the growing threat of flooding in the state capital and its environs.
The Authority made this known in a public announcement issued on Tuesday, warning developers, land grabbers, and other individuals against encroaching on waterways or converting drainage paths into residential or commercial spaces.
According to the notice signed by the Management of the Authority, the ongoing enforcement exercise includes the identification and removal of structures illegally erected on waterways and drainage channels, which it described as one of the major causes of flooding and environmental hazards within the capital city.
ACTDA, in the public notice which was made available to journalists by its Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Dr. Ossy Onuko, noted that the action became necessary following increasing incidents of flooding linked to blocked drainages and unauthorized developments on natural water channels across parts of the capital territory.
The Authority also raised concerns over the activities of some land speculators and developers allegedly allocating or selling waterways to unsuspecting members of the public for development purposes, warning that such practices are illegal and would no longer be tolerated.
It stressed that any structure found obstructing waterways, irrespective of its size or ownership status, would be removed without further notice.
ACTDA further urged residents and members of the public to support the ongoing environmental enforcement drive by reporting cases of blocked drainages, illegal structures, or encroachment on waterways for immediate action.
The renewed enforcement initiative is coming amid intensified urban development reforms and environmental management efforts by the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority under the Solution Government’s vision of building a cleaner, safer, better-planned and flood-free capital city.
While encouraging residents to comply with approved building regulations and environmental guidelines to avoid sanctions and demolition of illegal structures, the Authority further advised members of the public to channel complaints, reports, and enquiries through its designated contact line: 07039650429.
