The impacts have continued to reecho of how Nnewi South Students Association (NSSA) recorded a historic milestone with the successful hosting of its maiden “Homecoming of Giants” event, which brought together hundreds of students, accomplished personalities, community leaders and stakeholders in what many described as the beginning of a new era for student unity, mentorship and leadership development in the local government area.

The landmark gathering, which held earlier in January at the Skyview Resort in Utuh, attracted more than 500 students from the ten communities that make up Nnewi South Local Government Area, alongside representatives of various tertiary institutions within and outside Nigeria, making it one of the largest student assemblies ever witnessed in the area.

Far beyond being an ordinary reunion, the event served as a platform for reconnecting students with their roots while creating opportunities for networking, mentorship, capacity building and community development through interactions with distinguished sons and daughters of Nnewi South.
The association explained that the historic gathering was the culmination of months of strategic planning and consultations, during which its leadership embarked on extensive courtesy visits to eminent personalities and critical stakeholders across the local government to secure broad-based support and promote inclusiveness.

As part of activities leading to the event, the association also organized a National Student Awards competition aimed at identifying and celebrating outstanding talents among students from the area. Winners also emerged in several categories, including Best Student Master of Ceremonies, Best Student Graphic Designer, Best Student Footballer, Best Chapter President and other special recognition categories, reflecting the rich diversity of talents within the Nnewi South student community.

Speaking during the event, the National President of the association, Comrade Uchenna Onyedika Umeh, described the initiative as a deliberate effort to unite students from across the local government under one umbrella while fostering stronger relationships between the younger generation and accomplished leaders from the area.
He expressed appreciation to the numerous stakeholders, philanthropists and community leaders whose exemplary lifestyles and contributions to society continue to inspire young people, noting that the honours conferred during the programme were intended to recognize their commitment to youth development and community service.

According to him, the vision of the association extends beyond organizing social gatherings, as it seeks to build a formidable network that will nurture future leaders, encourage academic excellence and promote sustainable development across Nnewi South.
The event featured an array of activities designed to inspire and empower participants, including mentorship sessions, interactive networking opportunities, meet-and-greet engagements, a beauty pageant and the presentation of awards to deserving individuals who have distinguished themselves in leadership, business, education and community development.

Participants described the atmosphere as one filled with excitement, inspiration and renewed hope, as experienced leaders shared practical life lessons and professional experiences with students eager to make meaningful contributions to society.

Also present were the traditional ruler of Utuh, HRH Igwe P.N. Ilomuanya; renowned businessman, Chief Kingsley Obiukwu; and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sweet Homes Limited, Chief Amobi Ikeh, alongside other notable personalities who lent their support to the initiative.

The gathering equally attracted representatives of the Nnewi South Local Government administration, the immediate past Commissioner for Environment, Chief Felix Odimegwu, represented by Hon. Jerome Igwe; immediate-past member representing Nnewi South I Constituency, Hon. Kingsley Iruba; as well as the Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and Chief Executive Officer of Odiofele Industries, Chief Chinedu Anyaso.

The event further benefited from the presence of past and present student leaders, including the immediate-past National President of the NSSA, Hon. Comrade Dalu Orji; Deputy Leader of the Nnewi South Legislative Council, Hon. Venatius Okeke; Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Nzewi James; executives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Nnewi South, youth organizations, religious leaders and numerous students from within and outside the country.

In their separate reactions, participants at the event also expressed optimism that the initiative would become an annual tradition capable of strengthening educational advancement, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and community engagement, while preserving the values of excellence and service associated with the people of Nnewi South.
