A fully-loaded bus carrying school children was reportedly trapped in a pool of flood in Anambra State, following a heavy downpour that banged in the morning of Tuesday, September 22.
The critical and emergency situation, which reportedly occurred around the Ring Road axis of the Awka—Nibo road, was brought to the attention of the public by a public-spirited individual, who recorded and sent out a video from the scene for necessary intervention and urgent response from concerned authorities.
The video showed the school bus as it got stuck in the middle of the flood on their way to school.
According to the eyewitness who recorded the video, the driver attempted to maneuver the flood to convey the children, but the bus unfortunately tripped off at the centre as a result of the high volume of the flood and the unfavourable terrain.
He said even when a truck driver coming from the opposite side attempted to help by driving close to the trapped bus so as to rescue and evacuate the children through the window, he could not succeed, as the flood nearly pulled it off the ground due to unfamiliarity of the terrain. The truck driver consequently retreated, watching helplessly.
The eyewitness, in the video, raised an alarm about how critical and dangerous the children’s situation was, while also calling on relevant authorities to intervene and ensure safe rescue of the children, as well as their teacher and the driver.
As at the time of this publication, it has not been confirmed yet if the school children have been rescued or not, while no official statement has yet been made as to the current situation of the incident and the children.
