The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has condemned the reported assault of a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student of the university.
The university made its position known in a statement issued on Saturday, August 15, 2026, by its Director, Information and Public Relations, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, mnipr, following the emergence of videos of the incident on social media.
The video, which went viral on Saturday, shows the lecturer dressed in an academic gown as he was stripped half naked during an encounter with students shortly after he ran out of his office alongside a female student who was shouting and calling for help while holding the lecturer’s clothes.
Unverified reports have it that the lecturer had already undressed and was about having a good time with the female student right inside his office, before the female student allegedly ran away with his clothes, leaving the lecturer with no option than to wear his academic gown that was inside his office to chase after the girl, before he was allegedly apprehended and brutalized by other students in the area.
Reacting to the incident in the statement made available to newsmen, the University Spokesperson, Comrade Attah confirmed that it occurred within the university environment on Saturday.
According to him, UNIZIK Management expressed concern over the development, stressing that violence, self-help and jungle justice could not be justified under any circumstance.
The University Management, however, frowned against and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing sexual misconduct and other forms of inappropriate behaviour within the institution, noting that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, had consistently maintained a zero-tolerance policy on sexual misconduct and harassment.
The school Management noted that while allegations of misconduct are taken seriously, such allegations must be subjected to established institutional procedures and due process rather than being settled through physical violence or other forms of self-help.
It consequently directed an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the alleged misconduct and the subsequent assault on the lecturer.
The university said the matter was already under full review, with the appropriate administrative processes activated to ensure that justice was served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.
It further reiterated its commitment to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of both students and staff, while assuring that decisive action would be taken against conduct found to violate those principles.

“The University remains firmly committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of its staff and students and will continue to take decisive action against any conduct that violates these principles,” the statement partly read.
The institution said further developments and pronouncements on the matter would be communicated in due course.
