Agunechemba Hails Anambra Police Commissioner over Reorientation, Retraining of Vigilante Operatives

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Anambra State indigenous security outfit, Agunechemba, otherwise known as Udo Ga-Achị, has expressed profound appreciation to the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, for initiating the retraining, reorientation, and health assessment programme for all vigilante operatives across the state.

The commendation was contained in a press release issued in Awka on Thursday by the spokesperson of the security outfit, Comrade Nweke Nweke, who described the initiative as timely, strategic, and impactful for community policing and public safety across Anambra.

According to the release, the retraining exercise, spearheaded by the Anambra State Police Command in collaboration with the State Government, is tailored to equip vigilante operatives with essential knowledge on security protocols, local policing techniques, human rights, ethics, professionalism, and other core components of security management.

“The Agunechemba leadership is thrilled that the dedicated Police Commissioner has initiated the training and re-training of the vigilante operatives within the State,” the release stated.

“This programme will revitalize our activities, and we aim not only to highlight our capabilities but also to motivate all vigilante group members to take part in this process. After this initiative, we look forward to enhancing accountability, strengthening our organizational structure, and optimizing our operations throughout the State.”

Agunechemba described the initiative as a “clear demonstration of CP Orutugu’s commitment to professionalism and community-oriented policing,” while also lauding the Commissioner’s resolve to build synergy between the police and local security outfits.

The group further noted that the reorientation program would reinforce effective crime prevention and strengthen inter-agency cooperation, especially in areas such as evidence handling, crime scene management, and rule of law adherence — critical elements in modern security architecture.

According to the release, the health screening aspect of the initiative is equally significant, as it would help ensure that operatives are medically fit and mentally alert for field operations.

Reaffirming its full support for the initiative, Agunechemba called on all its members across the 21 local government areas of the state to embrace the programme wholeheartedly and participate actively in the training.

While applauding the State Government’s role in the programme, the group emphasized that the empowerment of grassroots security personnel remains a crucial pillar in achieving lasting peace and safety in communities.

“We view this opportunity as a testament to the cooperation and dedication between the State Police Command and the State Government to ensure community safety is reliable and effective,” the group declared.

Agunechemba, which has been at the forefront of local security in Anambra, reiterated its readiness to complement the efforts of the Police and other conventional security agencies, while also pledging to continue working in line with professional ethics and constitutional standards.

The group concluded by assuring Ndi Anambra of its renewed commitment to protecting lives and property, and ensuring that communities are safe, secure, and peaceful.
