A prime suspect has been reportedly arrested in connection with the recent shocking incident in Omasi community, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a young man’s room was reportedly drenched with petrol and set ablaze.

The suspect, Junior Okafor, was reportedly arrested in the early hours of Saturday, December 20, 2025, by a squad of the Agunechemba security outfit, Ayamelum Unit, led by the Unit Commander, Oseyi Makaranta.

According to information shared by a netizen and Chief Operating Officer of Ayamelum TV, Chukwuma Okafor (#Ebubenna), the arrest of the suspect followed period of intensive manhunt after he reportedly went into hiding shortly after the incident.

Recounting how the attack happened, he said the suspect allegedly entered the room of the victim, who is an Omasi youth, splashed fuel all-round , and ignited fire, in what has been generally described as a case of arson and attempted murder. Although the victim, however, reportedly survived the attack by sheer luck, he was said to have sustained various degrees of injuries, while his room was razed to rubbles as a result of the fire.

The account of the incident was further corroborated by a video circulated on social media, showing the severely burnt room where the attack took place. The video, shared by the source, also ratified the gravity of the incident and heightened public concern, especially as the suspect fled the community immediately after the attack.

“Following the incident, which involved attempted murder and arson, the suspect, Junior, fled Omasi and had been on the run since that day. But his arrest this morning brought an end to the manhunt,” he stated.

While commending Agunechemba Ayamelum Unit for their vigilance, professionalism, and commitment to community safety, Okafor said immediately after the suspect’s arrest, Agunechemba handed him over to the Nigeria Police, in line with due process and the rule of law.

Further update from him revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had reportedly directed that the suspect be transferred to either the State Police Headquarters or the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Awkuzu for comprehensive investigation.

Efforts by this reporter, Izunna Okafor, to get the reactions of the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on the incident proved abortive, as he was yet to respond to message of inquiry sent to him as at the time of this publication.
