FRSC Confirms First Serious Crash in Anambra Under New Sector Commander

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has recorded its first serious road traffic crash in the state under the leadership of its new Sector Commander, Corps Commander (CC) Bridget Asekhauno, who assumed office few weeks ago.

The crash, which occurred at about 9:50am on Friday, October 3, 2025, along the Awka-Onitsha Expressway near Igbariam Junction, involved two heavy-duty vehicles, comprising a wine-coloured Mack tipper truck and a red HOWO tanker with registration number KWR133YQ.

According to the FRSC Anambra Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Margaret B. Onabe, who confirmed the crash in a statement issued to newsmen on Friday, four persons were involved in the accident, out of which one male adult sustained bruises and was immediately rushed to Chira Hospital, Awkuzu, for treatment.

SRC Onabe said that while no fatalities were recorded, preliminary investigations attributed the likely cause of the crash to loss of control by the Mack tipper driver.

She added that the FRSC rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje Unit promptly arrived at the scene and was managing traffic while awaiting the evacuation of the damaged vehicles. She also explained that the content of the affected tanker, which was loaded with diesel, was being transloaded into another vehicle to avoid secondary hazards.

Reacting to the tragedy, the FRSC Sector Commander, CC Bridget Asekhauno, sympathized with the injured victim and wished him quick recovery. She stressed the need for motorists to always drive with caution, obey traffic rules, and remain vigilant at all times.

“We urge all road users to remain vigilant and cooperate with our officers to ensure safety on our roads. We are committed to working tirelessly to reduce road traffic accidents and enhance public safety in Anambra State,” she was quoted as saying.

The Sector Commander further cautioned motorists to always exercise patience, especially along highways, while also calling on members of the public to promptly report road emergencies through its the FRSC toll-free emergency line, 122.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that CC Asekhauno only recently assumed office as the 16th substantive FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra State, following her redeployment from the FRSC Headquarters Abuja to Anambra, to succeeded CC Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, who was redeployed to Delta State effective from September 12, 2025.

It was also gathered that Asekhauno, a seasoned and accomplished officer with a career spanning nearly three decades across several states, had earlier assured Anambra residents of her determination to improve road safety, reduce crashes, and promote responsible driving culture across the state.
