Anambra Will Not Harbour Criminals in the Name of Freedom Fighters — CP Orutugu Warns

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reiterated the historical identity of the state as a land of peace, tolerance, and innovation, while urging citizens to shun criminal elements exploiting the façade of self-government agitations to wreak havoc on innocent residents.

The Police Chief made the call through a statement issued on Thursday in Awka by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in which he also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and security across all parts of Anambra. He appealed to community leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and well-meaning individuals to assist the Police by exposing criminals who, under the guise of separatist movements, engage in extortion, kidnapping, arson, and violent attacks on law-abiding citizens.

“Anambra has always taken pride in its peaceful, tolerant, innovative, industrious and entrepreneurial spirit,” he noted, describing the current wave of criminality as a dangerous affront to those values. He emphasized the need to draw a clear line between genuine advocacy and criminal opportunism, warning that elements hiding under the pretense of self-determination were destabilizing communities for personal gain.

He reassured Ndi Anambra that the Police Command would continue to intensify its operations across the state in collaboration with stakeholders, to dismantle such criminal networks and guarantee the safety of lives and property.

The Commissioner also re-echoed the readiness of the Police to respond to any security threat and urged residents not to hesitate in reporting suspicious activities or requests for support.

“In the event of any request for security services, members of the public are advised to call the Command Control Room Number on 07039194332 or the PPRO on 08039334002 for a prompt response,” he stated.

CP Orutugu’s call comes on the heels of increasing reports of persons exploiting the ongoing agitation narratives to carry out violent crimes, mostly in rural communities and border areas. He warned such individuals to either retrace their steps or face the full weight of the law.

Meanwhile, the Police Command further reaffirmed its dedication to working closely with local communities, traditional and religious institutions, and all other relevant actors in ensuring a secure and crime-free Anambra.
