The Congress of Councillors of Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has unanimously passed a resounding vote of confidence in the Mayor of the council, Hon. Mrs. Amaka Obi (popularly known as Iyom Ifeabata), declaring that her administration has not only addressed important concerns but has also surpassed expectations in good governance, inclusiveness and grassroots development.

The resolution, contained in a detailed communiqué issued at the Idemili South Local Government Headquarters, Ojoto, and dated January 9, 2026, followed a comprehensive review of the performance of the executive arm of the council under Hon. Obi’s leadership.
The communiqué, which was officially communicated to the State Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo; was jointly signed by the Leader of the Idemili South Congress of Councillors, Rt. Hon. Ernest Ezeunyim; the Deputy Leader, Rt. Hon. Valentine Mbadugha; the Whip, Hon. Ebuka Chibueze; the Deputy Whip, Hon. Ikenna Jude Emeli; the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Nkiru Onwuakagba; Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, representing Nnobi Ward 2; and Hon. Kosisochukwu Okeke, representing Awka-Etiti Ward 1.

According to the councillors, the assessment was carried out against the backdrop of a communiqué earlier issued by the Congress on July 11, 2025, in which concerns were raised over logistics, councillors’ welfare, legislative support and the need for a more inclusive approach to governance within the council.
The Congress noted with satisfaction that the Mayor responded proactively and decisively to all the issues earlier identified, demonstrating what it described as people-centred leadership and uncommon administrative responsiveness.

One of the key areas highlighted by the councillors was the Mayor’s intervention during the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise. The Councilors recalled that some concerns had earlier been raised over inadequate disbursement of funds for the exercise, but noted that Hon. Obi promptly stepped in to correct the anomaly, which was attributed to bureaucratic bottlenecks. According to them, all outstanding balances were cleared without delay, a move that restored confidence across wards, eased logistics and strengthened grassroots mobilisation during the CVR exercise.
The Congress also commended the Mayor for approving and facilitating the full payment of all outstanding sitting allowances from January 2025, describing the decision as a clear affirmation of her respect for due process, legislative independence and the welfare of elected representatives.

In a related development, the Congress acknowledged the Mayor’s commitment to transparency and accountability, particularly her decision to ensure the immediate release of the duly assented 2025 Budget to the Legislative Chamber. The councillors noted that this step enhanced legislative oversight and accountability in project implementation within the local government.
Another major area of intervention applauded by the Congress was the upgrade of the Legislative Complex. The councillors recalled that the poor state of the chambers had earlier been brought to public attention, but expressed satisfaction that the Mayor initiated and completed upgrades that transformed the complex into a more dignified, functional and befitting environment for legislative business.
Beyond addressing specific grievances, the Congress observed that Hon. Obi’s administration has distinguished itself through a deliberate policy of inclusive governance. According to the councillors, they are now regularly consulted on key policy and developmental matters, legislative committees have been strengthened, and councillors are actively involved in project monitoring and community engagements across the twelve wards of Idemili South Local Government Area.

The communiqué further noted that the Mayor has gone beyond resolving these earlier concerns to expand grassroots development initiatives, improve staff welfare and morale, enhance revenue transparency and promote peace and political stability across the council area.
In view of these developments, the Congress of Councillors said they unanimously resolved to pass a vote of confidence in the Mayor Hon. Amaka Obi for what they described as her outstanding performance in office. The councillors also formally commended her commitment to democratic principles, respect for legislative authority and dedication to the welfare of both elected officials and the people of Idemili South.

The Congress equally reaffirmed its readiness to continue working in synergy with the executive arm of the Council to advance the collective interest of their constituents and deepen development at the grassroots.
Concluding the communiqué, the councillors stressed that true leadership is measured not by the absence of challenges, but by the courage, sincerity and effectiveness with which such challenges are addressed. They stated that Hon. Obi has convincingly demonstrated these qualities, adding that the vote of confidence represents a genuine expression of their collective satisfaction and trust in her capacity to lead Idemili South Local Government Area to greater heights.
This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that copies of the resolution were also forwarded to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, as well as the State and National leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
