Security surveillance and patrols have been intensified in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, following a deadly pre-dawn assault by armed assailants who launched a coordinated attack on the local vigilante office in the community, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the unidentified gunmen, reportedly stormed the premises in the early hours of June 5, 2025, unleashing a barrage of gunfire on the security post. In the fierce exchange that ensued, one member of the local security outfit was fatally hit, while the attackers succeeded in setting five operational vehicles ablaze.
In addition to torching the vehicles, the hoodlums were said to have set parts of the vigilante office on fire.
Reacting to the incident, the State Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu strongly condemned the act, describing it as an unprovoked assault on agents working tirelessly to ensure peace and security at the grassroots. He expressed dismay over the senseless killing and vandalism, noting that such acts not only undermine public safety but also challenge the authority of lawful institutions.
In response to the attack, a joint security force led by the Nigeria Police has swiftly moved into the area, taking over the scene and launching a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators. The team has also intensified surveillance and patrols around the area to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
The Police Command further appealed to residents of Umunze and its environs to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations and help track down those behind the violence.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, efforts are ongoing to gather intelligence and unmask those responsible for the deadly ambush, while assuring that updates on the situation would be provided as investigations unfold.
