$785.2m Projects Abandoned in Anambra, Lawmakers Launch Probe

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Projects gulping a whopping sum seven hundred and eighty-five point two million dollars ($785.2m) have reportedly been abandoned in Anambra.

The Member representing the Aguata Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Dominic Okafor disclosed this in a motion sponsored in the House, calling for an urgent investigation into the projects.

According to him, the projects, which include Umuchu Transmission Substation, and Agu Awka–Umuchu Double CCT Lines, were awarded since 2021, to Cartlark International Limited.

The projects, he further clarified, involves contract for the construction of a 2x60MVA, 132/33kV substation at Umuchu, with a 2x132kV line bays extension at Agu Awka Substation, and 132kV double-circuit overhead transmission lines from Agu Awka to Umuchu.

Hon. Okafor, in the motion, also revealed that the sum of $785 million has already been released to the contractor. He, however, said that work has long stopped at both sites, with the contract abandoning the projects after mobilizing to the sites, without any sign of resumption.

The motion was swiftly moved during the plenary, by the House, mandating the House Committee on Power to probe and invite the MD/CEO of Cartlark International Limited to explain the reasons the projects were abandoned, as well as account for the $785m already disbursed to the company vis-a-vis the projects since three years ago.
