Disability has been described as a call for deeper societal inclusion, justice, and equality; rather than a limitation or barrier to greatness.
The Founder of the Global Foundation for Nigerians with Disabilities, Hon. Sir Victor Meju, gave the the description in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), also known as World Disability Day, marked annually on December 3.
Hon. Meju, in the goodwill message and follow-up interview with this reporter, said the Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of Nigerians living with disabilities, while also reflecting on the urgent need to remove barriers that hinder their full participation in society.
According to him, disability should never be seen as an obstacle to human dignity or excellence, but rather as a call for society to build structures that are inclusive, equitable, and empowering for all citizens, regardless of physical condition.
“Disability is not a limitation; it is a call for society to build a Nigeria that is inclusive, equitable, and empowering. Every Nigerian deserves access to education, healthcare, employment, and social participation. Inclusion is not charity; it is justice, dignity, and opportunity,” he stated.
Hon. Meju further aligned his message with the 2025 theme of the global event, “Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” describing it as timely and instructive in a world still battling discrimination, exclusion, and limited access for persons with disabilities.
He noted that fostering inclusive societies goes beyond policy statements and requires deliberate actions, conscious investment, and a collective change in attitude toward persons with disabilities.
On behalf of the Global Foundation for Nigerians with Disabilities, Hon. Meju reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advocacy, accessibility, empowerment, and the creation of opportunities that allow persons with disabilities to thrive without restriction.
“On this special day, we honour the achievements of persons with disabilities, challenge stereotypes, and renew our commitment to breaking down barriers. Together, we can create a society where no one is left behind and where every talent and potential is recognized and celebrated,” he added.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed annually on December 3 to promote the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with disabilities across all spheres of society and development.
