In what appears to be another major boost for Nigeria’s industrialization drive and electricity sector development, the Obidanco Group of Companies has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Turkish-based transformer manufacturing company, Datsan Transformers Limited, for the local production of electricity transformers in Nigeria.

The agreement, which is expected to open a new chapter in Nigeria’s power infrastructure and manufacturing sector, was officially sealed during a recent deal-signing ceremony involving representatives of both companies.

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, Izunna Okafor, the Chief Executive Officer of Obidanco Group of Companies, Mr. Obinna Offor, disclosed that the partnership is primarily aimed at establishing transformer manufacturing operations in Nigeria to serve not only the local market but also other African countries.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the growing need for reliable electricity infrastructure across Nigeria and the African continent, especially at a time many countries are intensifying efforts toward power sector expansion, industrialization, and improved energy access.

He explained that the deal would position Nigeria as a strategic production and distribution hub for electricity transformers in Africa, while also creating employment opportunities, encouraging technology transfer, and reducing over-dependence on imported electrical equipment.

The Obidanco CEO, a native of Ebenator in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, added that the collaboration is expected to further enhance indigenous participation in the electrical equipment manufacturing sector while also deepening foreign technical partnerships capable of driving industrial growth in Nigeria.

Representing the Turkish company at the signing ceremony was Mr. Xu of Datsan Transformers Limited, who signed on behalf of the firm.

This was corroborated by a video footage from the agreement signing ceremony, showing officials of both companies displaying their respective copies of the signed agreement, amid expressions of optimism over the future of the partnership.

Both parties also expressed their beliefs that the development would significantly contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s electricity value chain, particularly as the country continues to battle challenges relating to power transmission, distribution, and equipment shortages.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that the partnership is coming at a period when Nigeria is witnessing renewed investments and reforms in the energy sector aimed at improving electricity supply and modernizing power infrastructure nationwide. Recent federal initiatives have focused heavily on upgrading transmission facilities, substations, and distribution networks across the country.

Based on the foregoing, local manufacturing of transformers could help reduce procurement delays, lower operational costs for electricity operators, and improve the speed of replacing damaged or overloaded transformers in communities and industrial clusters.

Findings by this reporter show that Datsan Transformers Limited, established in 1992 in Turkey, has grown into a notable transformer manufacturing company with exports to more than 40 countries across the world. The company has also manufactured millions of distribution transformers and operates across several voltage categories and load capacities.

The Obidanco-Datsan deal and partnership has also been described as part of the broader wave of international industrial collaborations emerging across Nigeria in recent times, particularly in the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure development sectors.
