The disclosure was contained in a press statement issued on Saturday, January 17, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, following what has been described as widespread public concern over reports of assaults, intimidation and disorder allegedly perpetrated by the masquerade during its outing.
According to the Police spokesperson, the person inside the masquerade has been identified as a 28-year-old male, Ifesinachi Ezeolu. The Command said the identification followed preliminary investigations into the incident, which had sparked intense reactions across the state and beyond.
The PPRO stated that while the Nigeria Police Force respects and recognises the rich cultural and traditional practices of Ndi Anambra, no cultural activity, belief system or custom should be used as a shield to harass, assault, intimidate or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens.
The Police Command emphasised that masquerade outings and other cultural displays, like all public gatherings, must be conducted peacefully and strictly within the confines of the law. It warned that any act capable of instilling fear, causing injury or leading to public disorder would not be tolerated under any guise.
The statement further disclosed that investigations into the Awgbu incident are ongoing, with efforts intensified to identify and bring to justice other persons who may have been involved in or aided the unlawful acts linked to the violent masquerade outing.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc mnips, PhD, reassured residents of the Command’s resolve to protect lives, property and the rights of all citizens, while maintaining respect for lawful cultural expressions.
CP Orutugu, according to the PPRO, noted that the Police would continue to collaborate with traditional rulers, community leaders and relevant stakeholders to ensure that cultural activities are conducted in a peaceful manner that does not infringe on public safety or human dignity.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to proactive policing and urged members of the public to continue to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information that can help prevent breaches of peace and security.
