The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said the tragic road crash that occurred along the Nnewi–Okigwe Road by Amichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State claimed the lives of five persons, including three children, and left five others with varying degrees of injuries.
According to a press statement issued on Saturday by the FRSC, Anambra State Command, through the Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret B. Onabe, the fatal crash occurred on Friday, July 25, 2025, at about 9:39pm, and involved ten individuals comprising four male adults, one female adult, three male children, and two female children.
The statement disclosed that five victims (comprising two adult males, one male child, and two female children) lost their lives in the crash, while the remaining five victims sustained varying degrees of injuries. Preliminary investigations, according to the FRSC, indicated that the crash was caused by brake failure of a speeding truck, which eventually rammed into other vehicles and pedestrians along the route.
It said the vehicles involved in the crash included a Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number NNE 893 ZG, a Honda motorcycle, a Qlink motorcycle, among others.
The statement further revealed that the FRSC rescue team was promptly mobilized to the scene following a distress call received in the early hours of Saturday morning, adding that the team arrived the scene within 31 minutes and immediately began rescue operations and managed traffic at the crash site, while also tracking the hospitals where the victims were taken to.
According to the report, six victims were taken to the Anglican Diocesan Hospital in Amichi, where three were confirmed dead on arrival and one later died while receiving treatment. The remaining two, the FRSC said, were responding to treatment.
Similarly, at Pat Angelina Hospital Amichi, four victims were admitted with bruises and bone injuries, out of which one male adult was confirmed dead, while the others were reportedly responding positively to treatment.
Meanwhile, the statement added that the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, had earlier flown from Abuja to Enugu on Saturday morning and proceeded straight to the crash scene from the airport. She was said to have met with the FRSC towing team who were already working on clearing the wreckage from the road, and was later received at the scene by the Mayor of Nnewi South, Hon. George Ezeogidi, who had reportedly been in constant communication with her even before her arrival. The statement said other top government functionaries and dignitaries in the local government also joined to receive the Sector Commander.
It was gathered after overseeing the towing and clearing operation, the FRSC boss proceeded on a hospital visitation to some of the victims who survived the crash, accompanied by the dignitaries and community stakeholders.
The Sector Commander, while expressing her deep condolences to the bereaved families, emphasized the need for vehicle owners and drivers to always prioritize maintenance of their vehicles and adhere strictly to road safety protocols. She noted that the unfortunate incident was yet another reminder of the dangers of negligence on the road.
“This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the necessity to obey traffic rules and regulations. Vehicles should be well maintained to prevent malfunctioning that invariably leads to crashes. We urge all road users to exercise caution and patience while driving to prevent such incidents in the future,” she said.
The FRSC boss also used the opportunity to call on the Local Government Mayor and other community leaders to work closely with the Corps to organize a town hall meeting aimed at sensitizing the motoring public within the area on safer road usage and traffic awareness.
According to the statement, the Nnewi Unit Command of the FRSC is already monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
The statement further urged members of the public to call the FRSC emergency toll-free number 122 to report any road emergency or download the FRSC Mobile App to access road safety services and features.
