Aguibeje, a town in Igboeze North Local Government Area is a shadow of itself. The people have been under lockdown before the advent of Covid-19 pandemic because there are virtually no road leading to and from that Community that is passable.

Between January this year and at the time of this report, the Community have recorded series of casualties due to lack of hospital and passable road to access medical care from a nearby hospital. The only Health facility, in Aguibeje was built during the administration of Jim Nwobodo but has become a hideout for rodents and other animals as the facility had since been abandoned by subsequent administrations.

When our Reporter went to Aguibeje, and introduced himself to one of the villagers and the purpose of his visit, he was received with sigh of relief.

An elder of the village who simply identified himself as Chief Williams told Onyokomita that Aguibeje town have been in terrible situation as means of livelihood are no where to be found in the Community.

“We have no light, no hospital facility, no road ,nothing.

Yet, this is a Community that has remained ardent supporter of PDP since 1999. We have never failed voting for PDP and I don’t know why government should abandon us like this.

” Let me advise you my son, never try coming here during rainy season because you can’t make it and it will be your worst day in life. Anyway you can’t even try it because where will you pass to this place

“We have been abandoned and left to live like animals”. He lamented.

Another indigene of Aguibeje who spoke to Onyokomita, Madam Grace Eze lamented the non chalant attitude of the government of Enugu State towards their plight.

Madam Eze wondered why the government would abandon them even after they have voted them in power and called on the government to see to their plight.

Our Reporter spotted a Grader Machine at work along Imeufu – Aguibeje road. On Investigation, Onyokomita found out that Imeufu – Aguibeje Market square, an insignificant part was being graded by the Igboeze North Local Government leaving the chunk of the entire roads at the mercy of financial ability of the indigens.

The Contractor, Atigwe Construction Company, allegedly owned by Hon. Engr Chukwemeka Simon Atigwe, representing, Igboeze North/ Udenu Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives is said to be ready to grade only portion of the road which has been paid for by the community.

The roads are partitioned according to hamlets and each hamlet is to pay for their own portion.

But Investigation by Onyokomita further reveals that some portions of the roads may not benefit from this self help as family hamlets where such portions are located may not be able to raise the money charged by the Construction Company.

Already, Atigwe Construction Company has given the Community a bill of over 13 Million Naira for the grading work.

It is further discovered that Aguibeje is part of Igboeze North/ Udenu Federal Constituency where Engr. Simon Atigwe represents.

But Onyokomita spotted an advertorial published online affirming that Governor Ugwuanyi administration has built roads and hospitals across the state.

According to our reporter, “many of the claims of aggressive Rural development by the Enugu State government does not reflect realities on ground”.

Meanwhile the Aguibeje Health Center which served the primary health needs of the Aguibeje Community has become a shadow of itself, begging for attention.

The health center which was built and commissioned in 1983 by the Jim Nwobodo administration is now looking like a debris of war scene.

It could be recalled how yellow fever claimed over 40 lives in Ete/ Umuopu community recently owing to poor amenities such as good drinking water, hospitals and accessible roads.

A visit to Aguibeje Community will surely leave you with the image of the lives of historic early men who had no means of living like humans.

Our efforts to speak to the Manager of the Construction company proved abortive as his phone line was switched off at the time of this report.

Onyokomita also sought to speak to the Commissioner for Rural Development, Enugu State but was unsuccessful as several calls put across to him were never picked.
